You’re on the right page if you need the full new-teen package.
This program covers your teen’s entire journey from learner’s permit through NJ road test, including the 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction plus permit purchase, vision test, GDL decals, MVC validation, and road test scheduling. Just need the standalone 6 hours of behind-the-wheel? See our NJ 6-Hour Teen Behind-the-Wheel Program.
Right Way Driving School’s driver’s education program is the complete teen path through the New Jersey Graduated Driver License (GDL) system. Eric Magrini, who has been teaching new drivers in Cedar Grove and Essex County for more than 20 years, walks every student from the day they start the program through their NJ road test. The package covers the required 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction plus the supporting services families need along the way: getting the permit, vision screening, GDL decals, validation with the MVC, and scheduling the road test.
The NJ Graduated Driver License Program
Every 16-year-old in New Jersey starts driving through the GDL program. The state requires:
- ✔ A learner’s permit obtained through a licensed driving school
- ✔ 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a state-licensed instructor
- ✔ A validated permit and at least 6 months of permit-holding before the road test
- ✔ Two red GDL decals on the vehicle while the student drives on a probationary license
Our program is designed around this timeline so students who start at 16 can be eligible for the road test on or near their 17th birthday. If the 6 hours are completed late or the permit is not validated 6 months ahead of the 17th birthday, NJ requires an additional 6-month wait from the date of the last lesson before the road test can be taken. Starting on time matters.

The Driving Lessons Themselves
The 6 hours of behind-the-wheel teaching follow the same structure as our standalone NJ 6-Hour Teen Behind-the-Wheel Program: three two-hour sessions covering vehicle control, residential driving, intersections, highway merging, and road test maneuvers. For the full hour-by-hour breakdown of what gets taught, see our 6-Hour Teen Behind-the-Wheel Program page. The driver’s education package wraps that instruction with the supporting services your teen needs to actually take the road test.
Pricing
Packages start at $475. Final pricing depends on pickup location and any add-on lessons beyond the required 6 hours. Call (973) 812-9088 to get a quote based on where you live and your timeline before the road test.
The road test fee charged by the NJ MVC is separate from the package price.
After the 6 Hours: Practice With Parents
Right Way recommends parents drive a minimum of 100 supervised hours with their teen between the end of the 6-hour program and the road test. Professional instruction builds the foundation, but real-world practice in different conditions, including night driving, rain, and unfamiliar routes, is what turns a student into a confident driver. Many families also add a few road test prep lessons right before test day.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should my teen start driver’s education?
As close to their 16th birthday as possible. New Jersey requires that the 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction be complete and the permit validated at least 6 months before the student turns 17 in order to take the road test on or near their 17th birthday. Starting at 16 keeps that timeline on track.
Does this package include the road test itself?
No. The road test is administered by the NJ MVC and the test fee is separate. Right Way schedules the test for you and provides the dual-control vehicle to take to the testing center. The package covers everything that leads up to the test day, but not the exam fee.
How are the 6 hours scheduled?
Most students take the 6 hours as three two-hour sessions, spaced out so they have time to absorb each lesson. Right Way schedules around school and activities, including evenings and weekends. We pick your teen up at home or school for every session.
Can my teen take more than 6 hours?
Yes. The 6 hours is the state minimum, and many students benefit from extra practice before the road test. Add-on lessons can be booked one at a time. Parallel parking, highway driving, and the actual test routes are common areas families want to spend more time on.
What if my teen has a learning difference or anxiety about driving?
Eric works with each student individually, so the curriculum adapts to where the student is. He has taught teens with ADHD, anxiety, and a range of learning differences over more than 20 years. Lessons move at the student’s pace and focus on the skills that need extra time.
Just need the state-required 6 hours on its own? See our 6-Hour Behind-the-Wheel Program. For all teen and adult programs, visit the driving school page.
