You’re on the right page if you just need the standalone 6 hours of behind-the-wheel.

This page covers the NJ MVC’s required 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction as a standalone offering. New 16-year-old going through the GDL process for the first time? Most families want our Teen Driver’s Education Program, which adds permit purchase, vision test, GDL decals, MVC validation, and road test scheduling to the 6 hours.

In New Jersey, every teen with a learner’s permit must complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a state-licensed driving school before they can take the MVC road test. Right Way Driving School’s 6-hour program is taught by Eric Magrini in a dual-control vehicle on the actual streets and test routes around Cedar Grove and Essex County. Eric has been teaching new drivers in this area for more than 20 years, and he picks every student up at home or at school for each lesson.

What the 6 Hours Covers

The 6 hours are split into three two-hour sessions so students can absorb the skills and build confidence between lessons:

Session 1 (2 hours) — Vehicle Control and Residential Driving

Pre-drive vehicle check, mirror and seat positioning, smooth starting and stopping, steering control, lane positioning, and driving through residential streets in Cedar Grove with stop signs, pedestrians, and parked cars.

Session 2 (2 hours) — Intersections, Highway, and Lane Changes

Right-of-way at intersections, traffic signal timing, merging onto Route 23 and the Garden State Parkway, lane changes with proper mirror checks, and speed management at residential, town, and highway speeds.

Session 3 (2 hours) — Road Test Maneuvers and Review

Parallel parking, three-point turns, K-turns, stopping on a hill, observation checks, and a full practice run on the actual routes near the Wayne or Lodi MVC testing centers so students know what to expect on test day.

The NJ MVC 6-Hour Requirement

New Jersey law requires every teen permit holder to log 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed driving school before they are eligible to take the road test. Right Way Driving School is fully licensed by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (License #000110), and we report your completed hours directly to the MVC so you do not have to handle the paperwork.

More Than the Minimum

The 6 hours is the state minimum. Most teens benefit from extra practice before the road test, especially with parallel parking and highway driving. Many families add lessons through our teen behind-the-wheel program for road test preparation, or sign up for adult driving lessons later. See all our programs on the driving school page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 6-hour program required by New Jersey?

Yes. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission requires every teen permit holder to complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction with a licensed driving school before they are eligible to take the road test. Right Way Driving School is licensed by the NJ MVC (License #000110) and reports your hours to the state on your behalf.

Who can take the 6-hour behind-the-wheel program?

Any New Jersey resident with a valid learner’s permit can take the 6-hour program. The most common students are teens age 17 working toward their first license, but adult permit holders are welcome too. You must hold a valid NJ permit to start the program.

Can I take more than 6 hours of lessons?

Yes. Most students want more than the state minimum, especially before the road test. You can add lessons one at a time, or sign up for our broader teen program. There is no upper limit on how much instruction you can take with Right Way.

Do I need to bring a car?

No. Right Way Driving School provides a dual-control vehicle for every lesson and for the road test itself. The dual-control setup means Eric has access to a brake on the passenger side, which keeps the car safe while you are still learning.
